Pulgas Open Space Reserve

Located in Woodside, the entrance to this park is just a couple of minutes of of 280. Click here for a map to the parking lot.

A shot of the parking lot.

This park is great for two reasons. First, the off leash area is a nice open space of wilderness, not just a fenced in park. Joey can spend hours crashing through brush, under trees, and down trails following hundreds of different scents. Squirrels and birds will catch her attention and she's off to try and track them down. There's some random steps in the center that lead to the large tree pictured above. Because it kind of stands in the center of a clearing, Joey and I dubbed it the Sacred Tree of Pulgas.

The other great thing about this park is that when you're ready for a walk of your own, there's several nice trails (leash required) that provide a not too challenging hike. Here's a few shots of along the trail.

Note that when you first enter the parking lot, there's two entrances. The west entrance will take you along a trail of switchbacks leading up to the dog park. You'll know you hit it because you'll encounter the sign below.

The first time I went to the park, I made the (fortuitous) mistake of taking the eastern trail entrance which takes you along public lands (Cordilleras Trail). You eventually end up at the head of the Polly Geraci or Dusky-footed Woodrat Trail (see map). It's a long way to the dog park if you follow these trails but makes for a really nice hike.
